Job Summary
A Quality Engineer is responsible for implementing and monitoring quality assurance and quality control procedures to ensure that all construction activities, materials, and workmanship comply with approved specifications, project requirements, and applicable quality standards.
The role focuses on maintaining quality compliance, preventing defects, reducing rework, and supporting successful project delivery through systematic inspection, testing, documentation, and continuous improvement processes.
Typically reports to the QA/QC Manager or Project Manager.
Job Description
The Quality Engineer oversees quality control activities on-site and within project processes, ensuring compliance with approved Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), method statements, quality standards, and contractual requirements.
This role requires strong technical knowledge of construction quality systems, engineering standards, inspection methodologies, material testing, and documentation control procedures.
Core Responsibilities
1. Quality Management System Implementation
- Implement Project Quality Plan (PQP) and QA/QC procedures
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 quality management standards
- Monitor implementation of approved quality procedures and processes
- Prepare quality documentation, checklists, and inspection records
- Ensure adherence to approved method statements and ITPs
2. Inspection & Quality Control
- Conduct inspections of civil, structural, architectural, and/or MEP works
- Verify work execution according to approved drawings and specifications
- Monitor workmanship quality and construction practices
- Ensure compliance with approved quality standards during all project phases
- Coordinate inspections with consultants and clients
3. Material Inspection & Testing
- Review material approvals and technical submittals
- Verify compliance of incoming materials with project specifications
- Coordinate laboratory testing and third-party inspections
- Review test reports and ensure compliance with standards
- Monitor material handling and storage conditions
4. Non-Conformance Management
- Identify quality issues and non-conforming works
- Raise and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)
- Conduct root cause analysis for recurring quality issues
- Monitor corrective and preventive action implementation
- Ensure closure of quality observations and NCRs
5. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain quality records, logs, and inspection reports
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly QA/QC reports
- Track inspection approvals and quality performance indicators
- Maintain as-built quality documentation
- Support preparation of handover documentation and O&M manuals
6. Audit & Compliance Monitoring
- Participate in internal and external quality audits
- Ensure project compliance with contractual and technical requirements
- Monitor implementation of corrective actions from audit findings
- Support consultant and client quality reviews
- Ensure audit readiness of all QA/QC documentation
7. Coordination & Technical Support
- Coordinate with Site Engineers, QA/QC Inspectors, and subcontractors
- Attend quality meetings and technical coordination discussions
- Provide technical guidance regarding quality-related matters
- Support project teams in resolving quality issues
- Coordinate with planning and construction teams for inspection scheduling
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of construction QA/QC systems and standards
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Familiarity with ASTM, BS, ACI, and ISO standards
- Knowledge of material testing and inspection procedures
- Understanding of ITPs, method statements, and quality documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Good reporting and technical documentation skills
- Strong communication and coordination abilities
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and QA/QC reporting systems
