Job Summary

A Surveyor is responsible for carrying out land and construction site surveying activities to establish accurate levels, coordinates, alignments, and dimensions required for project execution.

The role ensures that all setting-out works and measurements are performed according to approved drawings, project specifications, and engineering standards to support accurate construction and prevent dimensional errors.

Typically reports to the Site Engineer, Project Engineer, or Construction Manager.

Job Description

The Surveyor performs site measurements, leveling, layout marking, coordinate verification, and as-built surveying activities using surveying instruments and engineering drawings.

This role requires strong technical knowledge of surveying principles, coordinate systems, construction layouts, and operation of modern surveying equipment such as Total Stations, GPS systems, and automatic levels.

Core Responsibilities

1. Site Surveying & Setting Out

  • Perform site setting-out activities according to approved drawings
  • Establish coordinates, benchmarks, and control points
  • Mark layouts for:
    • Excavation
    • Foundations
    • Columns
    • Roads
    • Utilities
    • Structural elements
  • Verify levels, alignments, and dimensions before construction activities

2. Measurement & Verification

  • Conduct site measurements and dimensional verification
  • Ensure construction works are executed within approved tolerances
  • Verify elevations, grid lines, and structural positioning
  • Monitor settlement or movement where applicable
  • Assist engineers in resolving dimensional discrepancies

3. Survey Equipment Operation

  • Operate and maintain surveying instruments including:
    • Total Station
    • Auto Level
    • GPS Equipment
    • Laser Level
  • Ensure equipment calibration and proper handling
  • Report equipment malfunctions or calibration issues

4. As-Built Surveying

  • Conduct as-built surveys for completed works
  • Prepare as-built coordinates and level records
  • Support preparation of as-built drawings
  • Verify completed works before consultant/client inspections

5. Coordination with Site Teams

  • Coordinate with Site Engineers and Foremen for work priorities
  • Support QA/QC inspections related to dimensions and levels
  • Assist subcontractors with layout clarification
  • Attend site coordination meetings when required

6. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain survey records, coordinates, and level books
  • Prepare survey reports and measurement documentation
  • Record benchmark and control point information
  • Maintain survey data and instrument logs
  • Support quantity verification when required

7. Quality & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure surveying activities comply with project specifications
  • Follow approved surveying procedures and engineering standards
  • Ensure safe operation of surveying equipment on-site
  • Maintain awareness of excavation and heavy equipment hazards
  • Use proper PPE during all site activities

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles and construction layouts
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Proficiency in operating Total Station and leveling equipment
  • Knowledge of coordinates, benchmarks, and grid systems
  • Understanding of construction tolerances and dimensional control
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and survey software
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Problem-solving and technical coordination skills
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities
